Suaka Insan Institute Takes Proactive Public Health to the Streets

BANJARMASIN, INDONESIA-In a world increasingly burdened by mental health crises and post-pandemic isolation, the frontlines of healthcare are shifting from sterile clinical wards to vibrant community spaces. On Friday, August 7, 2026, the Suaka Insan Institute of Health demonstrated this modern approach to medicine by taking a bold step out of the lecture halls and into the streets.

Led by Rector Sr. Imelda Ingir, SPC, PhD, a delegation of more than 50 students, lecturers, administrative staff, and facility workers participated in a massive flashmob and expressive arts competition. The event was held to commemorate the 76th anniversary of South Kalimantan Province and the 19th anniversary of Sambang Lihum Psychiatric Hospital. Yet, for the Institute, the celebration was more than a local festivity—it was a strategic, real-world exercise in community health integration and mental health destigmatization.

Celebrating community and shaping the future of healthcare! From expressive arts to on-site health assessments and program outreach, Suaka Insan is proud to advocate for holistic well-being alongside the local community.

Moving Beyond the Clinic Walls

Historically, mental health care has been siloed, keeping psychiatric facilities separated from everyday public life. By actively participating in an arts festival at a psychiatric hospital, Suaka Insan’s students and faculty sent a powerful message: holistic healthcare requires breaking down barriers.

The presence of the Institute’s highest leadership, including Sr. Imelda Ingir, underscored the vital importance of this mission. When future nurses and healthcare administrators dance and celebrate alongside community members and mental health advocates, they dismantle the long-standing stigma surrounding psychiatric care. It is a form of social medicine—using joy, movement, and expressive arts as a bridge to community well-being.

“The involvement of our diverse academic community from our household staff to our senior lecturers shows that health advocacy is a collective responsibility,” the Institute’s actions conveyed.

Proactive Care in Action

The Institute’s impact at the event extended far beyond the arts competition. Recognizing that physical and neurological well-being are deeply intertwined, Suaka Insan’s promotion team set up an on-site health station offering free balance screenings to the public.

This proactive public health outreach provided immediate, tangible value to festival attendees. Balance assessments are a critical, often-overlooked diagnostic tool that can identify early neurological issues, vestibular disorders, and fall risks in older populations.

Alongside these critical screenings, the team provided public education on the Institute’s core academic offerings, including the Bachelor of Nursing, Professional Nurse (Ners), Physiotherapy, and Health Administration programs. By showcasing these disciplines in a lively, accessible environment, the Institute effectively translated dense academic concepts into approachable community health solutions.

A Local Action with Global Resonance

While the anniversary celebration was a regional event, the strategy employed by the Suaka Insan Institute of Health aligns perfectly with the current global health agenda. The World Health Organization (WHO) and international health bodies continually emphasize that the future of medicine relies on community-based interventions.

Global healthcare systems are currently facing severe shortages of healthcare professionals who are not only clinically proficient but also culturally competent and community-oriented. By immersing its students in public celebrations and community-level outreach, Suaka Insan is answering this global call. The Institute is training a new generation of healthcare workers who understand that prescribing medication must go hand-in-hand with social prescribing—fostering connection, physical activity, and community support.

Proactive healthcare in action! During the recent arts festival, our dedicated promotion team offered free balance screenings to the public. Early detection is key, and we’re committed to bringing essential health services directly to the community.

Shaping the Future of Healthcare

As the world continues to navigate the complexities of modern public health, the necessity for institutions that blend rigorous medical training with deep empathy has never been greater. The successful integration of Suaka Insan’s team into the anniversaries of South Kalimantan and Sambang Lihum Psychiatric Hospital stands as a blueprint for how educational bodies can actively heal and uplift their surrounding populations.
