Fighting Back Against Online Gambling Spam: RJI Kalimantan Selatan Empowers Journal Managers with OJS Security Training

BANJARMASIN-In response to the increasing frequency of cyberattacks particularly from online gambling websites targeting Open Journal Systems (OJS), Relawan Jurnal Indonesia (RJI)-South Kalimantan has taken a proactive stance. Commemorating the 10th anniversary of RJI, the regional chapter organized a “Journal Security and Management Seminar and Workshop” at the Universitas PGRI Kalimantan Auditorium on Wednesday (June 24, 2026).

The strategic training session was attended by more than 38 participants, including academics and journal managers representing various public and private higher education institutions across South Kalimantan. Among the active participants were Refki Khaira Habibi and Maria Frani Ayu Andari Dias, Journal Managers from the Institut Kesehatan Suaka Insan. They attended the event to represent the management of their institution’s two SINTA-accredited journals: Jurnal Keperawatan Suaka Insan (SINTA 3) and Jurnal Suaka Insan Mengabdi (SINTA 5).

During his opening speech, the Chairman of RJI South Kalimantan, Dr. Reza Fauzan, emphasized the critical urgency of this training. He noted that anxiety among journal editors in South Kalimantan has escalated due to numerous OJS platforms being compromised, hacked, or defaced with malware and online gambling advertisements.

“This event was born out of our shared concerns. Many of our OJS platforms have been targeted by irresponsible parties, especially online gambling networks. This issue has directly affected many journals managed by our colleagues here in South Kalimantan,” Dr. Reza Fauzan stated.

He also conveyed his deep appreciation to Universitas PGRI Kalimantan for facilitating this crucial initiative. “We are immensely grateful to the Rector and the management of Universitas PGRI Kalimantan for their massive support, particularly in hosting this event. Our highest appreciation also goes to all the participants who have dedicated their time to enhance the security and overall quality of their journals,” he added.

Strong support was also voiced by the Rector of Universitas PGRI Kalimantan, Dr. H. Alimuddin A. Djawad, M. Hum, who officially opened the event. He highlighted that journals serve as the primary public face of higher education institutions.

“A journal is the face of a university. Its professional management is vital for the scientific publication activities of lecturers and researchers,” Dr. H. Alimuddin A. Djawad remarked. He also reminded journal managers of three major current challenges: maintaining strict publication ethics, conducting regular management audits, and consistently strengthening system security.

To equip participants with practical and applicable skills, the seminar featured two prominent speakers. Dr. Arifin Riyadi, M.Pd., from Universitas PGRI Kalimantan, delivered a session on “Healthy OJS Management,” while Fauzi Nurdin St. Mudo presented essential strategies on “OJS Security.”

Following the seminar, the event transitioned into a hands-on workshop focused on practical OJS management and real-time security enhancement simulations. By merging theory with practice, the organizers aimed to enable journal managers to immediately apply these security measures to safeguard their digital academic publication assets.

This full-day event is expected to serve as a concrete milestone in building a secure, credible, and high-quality scientific publication ecosystem across South Kalimantan [MFA].
